At Mermaid Straw, we understand that there’s an endless amount of reusable options available today. It’s great to see so many companies dedicated to offering plastic free, reusable products. But, are these companies truly practicing what they preach? Before purchasing your reusable products, here are a few questions you should be asking:
1. Is their process plastic free?
Even though some companies are providing an "eco friendly" solution, they may be adding to the single use plastic pollution problem at the same time by using single use plastic in their facility.
2. What kind of packaging do they use?
Oftentimes there can be irony found in buying a reusable bottle that gets sent to you covered in plastic, or ordering some straws online only to have them arrive at your doorstep wrapped in plastic and sent in a plastic bubble mailer.
3. Where is your money going?
Does the company donate a portion of their sales to helping our environment? If so, how much of their sales are donated and who are they donating to? These are all important answers to find out so you know where your money is going.
4. Do they have a mission behind their product?
Are they actively dedicating time to help cleanup their local community? It only takes a quick search on a companies Facebook page or Instagram to find out what that company is all about.
Companies who sell reusable items are NOT all the same and they are not automatically classified as a green/eco-friendly company just because they offer reusable products. Sometimes you have to look a little closer to make sure your money is actually going towards helping the planet... Not harming it.

Whenever you order from us, it is guaranteed to arrive to you in fully recyclable or compostable packaging. Even down to our paper tape, everything we use to send our products to you can be recycled or composted. Hypothetically, if one of our mailers were to end up on the side of the road, it would naturally break down within a couple of weeks. Our mission is to eliminate single-use plastic through our products, packaging, raising awareness, and we intend to live through our mission every day.

Yes, we understand it’s 2020. When people want something, they want it as soon as possible. I promise, we totally get it, but get this; your instant gratification is hurting the planet! Mermaid Straw uses pre-scheduled routes with USPS as to not need any unnecessary trips! By choosing rush shipping, USPS and other delivery services are required to make special, unscheduled trips to the consumer which results in extra carbon emissions getting released into the atmosphere, ultimately causing more problems for the issue we’re trying to combat.

1% for the Planet is an international non-profit organization whose members take a pledge to give back at least 1% of their annual sales (not just profits) to the protection of our environment - whether or not they were profitable. This assures that each member makes a commitment of transparency to ensure they uphold their promise to donate and follow through.
Mermaid Straw is proud to be a member of this organization joining more than 2,000 other eco-conscious members, in over 45 countries, who are coming together to protect the future of our planet.So far 1% for the Planet has certified more than $225 million in support to approved environmental nonprofit organizations such as Surfrider Foundation, Alliance for the Great Lakes, Sea Shepard, Ocean Conservancy, Sea Turtle Conservancy - all of which we have donated to on behalf of our customers.

In addition to only using 100% recyclable or compostable packaging, any trash produced at our headquarters and fulfillment center is properly disposed of by us. We adamantly believe that the company that produces the waste should be responsible for disposing of it. This responsibility should never fall on the customer. We’re so dedicated to making sure plastic never reaches our customers, we even go out and clean up trash left behind by other big companies.
During our beach clean ups held each season from April through September, we find so many branded soda bottles, food wrappers, grocery store bags and microplastics, all left behind by consumers who purchased from companies who are, quite simply, not accepting responsibility for their own waste.

While our packaging might cost a little bit more and you might have to wait a day or two longer than rush shipping, these are all things we do because we care.
